Trombonist Alex Melzer is a freelance musician in the Los Angeles area with a diverse musical background. In May 2017 Alex earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Trombone Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and is currently pursuing his Master of Music Degree in Trombone Performance at the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music.
Alex enjoys playing a wide variety of styles including orchestral, chamber music, contemporary music, jazz and pop and has performed throughout the US in venues such as the Brooklyn Art Museum, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Chicago Symphony Center, and the Greek Theater. In 2013, Alex was a semifinalist with the Interlochen Brass Quintet at the Fischoff Chamber Competition, and also performed a benefit recital with the Sliders Trombone Quartet to raise over $500 for charity. Mr. Melzer has also been involved in several recording projects on the Oberlin Record Label, screen scoring projects at USC Thornton, live performances on IPR 88.7FM and WOBC 95.1 FM, and a collaborative album entitled “To Be Perfectly Clear” with Soundcloud artist TapDaddy.
In addition to his experience as a trombonist, Alex has developed a useful set of musical skills offstage. He is currently a mentor for the Thornton Community Outreach Program, an audio and lighting assistant for Trojan Event Services, and has worked as a stage manager for Aspen Music Festival. Alex’s interests outside of music include folding origami, watching movies, and enjoying the outdoors. A native resident of Colorado, Alex enjoys hiking, biking, unicycling, snowboarding, longboarding, and camping. His best friend at home is a black yorkie poodle named Oliver.
